Driveway Installation FAQ
What is the difference between Tarmac and Asphalt?
While often used interchangeably, tarmacadam (Tarmac) uses larger aggregates, while asphalt is a more modern, smoother mix. We provide both options depending on your aesthetic preference and usage requirements.
Do I need planning permission for a new tarmac driveway?
Under current UK law, you do not need planning permission if the driveway is made of porous material or if the water drains to a permeable area. We ensure all our installations are SuDS compliant.
How long before I can drive on my new surface?
Typically, you can walk on it within hours. However, we recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before parking a vehicle on it, especially in warmer weather, to allow the bitumen to fully cure.
Does tarmac come in different colours?
Yes. While black is the standard, red tarmac is a popular choice for traditional properties. It uses a specific red pigmented bitumen and matching red stone aggregate.
Can you fix cracks in an old tarmac driveway?
Yes, we offer repair and resurfacing services. If the base is still strong, we can often perform an 'overlay' which saves the cost of a full excavation while giving you a brand-new looking surface.
How do I maintain my tarmac driveway?
Tarmac is very low maintenance. An occasional sweep and jet wash will keep it looking fresh. Avoid getting oil or petrol on it, as these chemicals can dissolve the bitumen binder over time.
